How to take amazing travel pics with just your iPhone

Updated: Dec 26, 2019

With the impressive quality of smartphones these days, you really don't need a fancy DSLR camera to take amazing photos of your travels. This is good news, since it is no longer necessary to spend about two hundred dollars on a separate camera and no longer have to carry heavy equipment, go!

(Professional advice: use that extra moola to plan another trip). Since your trusted iPhone will accompany you on every trip, make sure you know how to use it to the fullest. Here are 7 ways to take professional-level photos with your iPhone.

Lighting, camera, ACTION!

Lighting is everything. Well, actually, solar lighting is everything. Good natural lighting should be the number one objective of each shot, so turn off the flash and plan your shots accordingly. In general, you want the sun to be a little behind you to highlight colors and details. Therefore, if you are looking for a bright shot of your hotel in the morning, but would be aiming at the sun, just wait until the afternoon to receive the shot. For water shots, say the ocean or a pool, noon is usually the best, when the sun is directly over you, to capture the true blues! Last but certainly not least, you can almost never go wrong with any shot taken during the "golden hour", the last hour of the day around sunset. During this time, the hardness of the sun has weakened, creating a softer environment with less contrast and shadows with vibrant tones of roses, purples and tangerines.

Click down

We have all fought for that perfect selfie or group photo, extending with a trembling arm in a brave attempt to find a flattering angle that suits everyone and does not miss the electric sunset in the background. Once you find the perfect position, you may realize that you cannot move your thumb down to press the camera button on the screen without messing things up. Total failure! But don't fear: just press the “volume down” button on the side of the camera. When in camera mode, the iPhone volume drops, but it works just like the on-screen camera button. Total lifesaver You can also use Apple headphones to click: simply connect them to your phone and use the button to take stealthy photos or to secure a still shot if you are using a tripod.

Use portrait mode

Portrait mode helps everyone look like a professional photographer. Using portrait mode helps you automatically focus on the subject by blurring the background a bit. Photos taken in this mode look crisp and clean, even before editing. Within portrait mode, you can also adjust the lighting. Settings such as "studio light" or "stage light" can really improve the professionalism of your content when used correctly.

Change up that horizon line

Don't be afraid to change the position or framing of the horizon in your shot! Ninety-nine point nine percent of people just point and shoot from eye level with the horizon line that crosses the center of the photo. For some new and "worthy of receiving" photos, adjust where the horizon is located. For a bright sky or sunset, set the low horizon line in your frame to focus on the sky. He also considers that some of the most captivating images have no horizon line. Capture a photo from above, such as from your hotel balcony or up a hill, and point and shoot down at your subject. Without any horizon line as a distraction, the exclusive focus of the image will be on the subject.

Get closer than you think is necessary

Sometimes we don't need to see a subject's entire body from head to toe. And certainly there is no need for a third of a photo to be the ground under your feet. Try to take a few steps forward and see how the whole composition changes! You will see more the nuances of facial expressions and notice small details that you would not have seen from afar.

Capture movement with burst mode

What happens when someone with a camera starts saying: "Okay, one ... two ... three ..."? We tell you! Everyone is stiff, maybe bows a head or bends one knee, shows a smile, and that's it! Instead of "the same ole the same ole", try adding some movement to your photos. Make your subject jump in the air or take a fun turn. If you are filming a nice café or building a facade, do not wait until everything is clear of cars or people in the front. Sometimes, you will get a better shot with the cyclist passing by. A small movement can make an image much more interesting. But here is the key to these shots: burst mode! Instead of pressing the camera button once, press and hold. This will put the camera in continuous shooting mode or "burst mode", taking multiple photos in a short period of time. This will leave you with many photo options to choose from on the roll of your camera, without having to make your friend jump in the air again and again until you miss the perfect shot (unless you just want them to do it! ).

Obey the rule of thirds using the iPhone camera grid

This is a small and practical trick to help frame basic shots, and you don't even have to be good at math to get it! Go to Settings on your phone, select Camera and turn on the Grid button. Now, when you are ready to take the picture, enter your camera and you will see that the screen is divided into thirds with a subtle grid overlay. If you are filming a person, align it directly with one of the vertical lines, so that they are located only in a third of the overall composition of the frame, instead of being directly in the center of the image. This helps create a visually pleasing proportion for the photo, without focusing too much on one thing. The same goes for horizontal thirds; place the subject (or the horizon line) along the upper or lower horizontal line, then the rest of the image will be spaced correctly.

Use quick, app-based photo editing software

Of course, social networks have a large number of filters that you can place in a photo before posting them, but sometimes they can be exaggerated and overused, and sometimes they can make your photo look deleted or fake. In addition, each photo needs its own unique edition application. Used by professionals and amateurs, Adobe's Lightroom application allows you to edit every detail of the image as you wish. You can even create presets in your own editing style and apply them to photos quickly when you're really in a hurry! VSCO is another favorite photo application with many filters and individual settings to choose from.

Ask someone else to take a photo—and be bossy!

We are in 2019. Almost all humans on this planet are now in photography and on social networks, so you should not be ashamed when you ask someone to take a picture. Not only will you be happy to have done it, but you will probably be asked to take one in return! And what just happened here ... Did you just make a new friend? Going through the iPhone means that control is now out of your hands, but you're still going to want a great photo, so don't be afraid to be a little bossy. Along with your "likes" and "thank you", it is also good to add: "Could you get a little closer?" Or "Could you have that beautiful lemon tree in the frame with us?" We all appreciate the address a bit!
